A weeklong Caribbean cruise out of Florida turned grim on Monday when a crew member went overboard and was later confirmed dead, Princess Cruises says. The incident occurred on the Regal Princess as it sailed off Mexico's Caribbean coast en route to Cozumel, near Cancun, CBS News and NBC Miami report. Passenger David Jimenez told CBS News Miami that the captain announced the crew member was missing, prompting an hourslong search involving the ship, another cruise vessel, and Mexican maritime authorities.
Jimenez said the Regal Princess repeatedly circled the area before the line informed passengers the crew member had died; no name or details were released. The Cozumel stop was canceled (the island will be added back onto the itinerary on the ship's return trip to the US, per the Palm Beach Post), and Princess Cruises said it's working with authorities and offering counseling and support to those on board. Foul play isn't suspected. The ship departed Fort Lauderdale on Saturday for a seven-day itinerary that also includes Belize and Honduras, per CBS.
