A British family is trying to trade their cul-de-sac life for a passport full of stamps—and they're hoping a $7 raffle ticket will make it happen. As the Los Angeles Times reports, Daniel Leigh and Lauren Vaknine have listed their five-bedroom Hertfordshire home, valued at about $2 million, on the Raffall platform, with a goal of selling 550,000 tickets by December. The winner would get the house outright—no mortgage, legal fees, or taxes—plus roughly $45,000 for bills. If they fall short of the ticket target, which they need to do to meet all accompanying expenses for the promotion, a winner will still receive half of the proceeds in cash.
Leigh, a longtime education recruiter, and Vaknine, a holistic wellness coach who spent her childhood dealing with severe arthritis, say a recent US road trip and a sense of life on a "conveyor belt" pushed them to prioritize experience over property. They plan to take their two young kids on a yearlong journey spanning Australia, India, and all 50 US states, while a portion of each ticket will support the domestic-violence charity Solace Women's Aid. Leigh says, "While someone new makes memories in our home, we get to go and make some of our own." As for Vaknine, she notes: "For me, the extraordinary life isn't about mansions, yachts, or extravagance. It's about experiencing life fully, finding deep inner joy, and I can't do that if I stay within the same four walls in the same town I grew up in."
