Trump Goes After Thune With New Slam

President Trump is turning up the heat on Senate Majority Leader John Thune, urging him not to let senators leave Washington for August recess without acting on the election bill Trump has been championing. In a Monday Truth Social post, Trump said Thune should keep the chamber in session until it passes the SAVE America Act—or, "far better still," scraps the filibuster so Republicans can push through the election measure and others. He warned that Democrats would eliminate the filibuster once back in power, adding that Democrats were "lucky" to have the current GOP Senate leadership in place, reports the Hill.

The post follows Trump's call last week for supporters to pressure Thune on the legislation. GOP Sens. Mike Lee of Utah and Rick Scott of Florida echoed Trump's call to delay the recess until an election bill passes, though they have not forced the issue procedurally. For now, Trump's push appears stalled: The election measure lacks the votes to clear the Senate, and Politico reports there is little appetite inside the Republican conference to end the 60-vote filibuster rule. The White House warned last week that Trump's patience with Thune was wearing thin.
