Costco is poised to pay up over subject lines that allegedly made its "last day" deals anything but. The retailer has agreed to a $14 million class-action settlement over promotional emails sent to Washington state residents that, according to a lawsuit, advertised limited-time offers even after Costco had decided to extend them. The settlement, which Costco reached without admitting wrongdoing, won preliminary court approval on June 23; a final hearing is set for Oct. 2.
Anyone in Washington state who received a Costco commercial email between June 2, 2021, and July 7 of this year may qualify for a share, with no proof of purchase or membership required. Claims are due Aug. 24, and payouts—via PayPal, Venmo, Zelle, or check—will depend on how many people file, though those who are eligible could receive up to $500 per qualifying email, according to Allrecipes.com. Submitting a claim, which can be done via this site, waives the right to sue over the issue.
