New Russia, North Korea Link May Be Bad News for Ukraine

The first-ever road connection between Russia and North Korea is nearly ready to open, and a Ukrainian rights group argues it's less about tourists and more about tanks. The road bridge over the Tumen River—linking Khasan in Russia's far east to North Korea's Tumangang—would run alongside the countries' lone rail link, the so-called Friendship Bridge built in 1959. Ukrainian group Truth Hounds says the economics don't add up: the crossing is estimated to cost more than $100 million, versus bilateral trade of just $34 million in 2024. The group's open-source investigation, shared with the Guardian, concludes the bridge is designed as a harder-to-track logistics route for the Ukraine war and broader military cooperation. Roads, they say, would ease the flow of vehicles and goods and provide better concealment from satellite monitoring. New infrastructure on the Russian side reportedly includes a 10-lane checkpoint and a helipad.
