Europe Wildfires May Burn for 'Several Months'

Fire season in parts of Europe may be measured in months, not weeks, officials now warn. A top French fire official told RTL radio that wildfires in the country are expected to burn "for a number of weeks, likely several months," as France and Spain struggle with blazes that have forced more than 360,000 people from their homes, reports Firstpost. A fire service rep in southwest France tells the BBC that fighting that wildfire is like "David against Goliath."

"We are facing a situation today that is the most difficult we've seen, the most difficult since the Second World War," said French President Emmanuel Macron, even as he said some fires near Bordeaux have been contained or stabilized. He cautioned conditions will likely deteriorate before easing. In Spain, Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez blamed a "climate emergency" for increasingly intense fires. Spain's largest recorded blaze, in Avila province, has helped drive the amount of burned land this year to six times that of early 2025.
