A rare visitor has now laid eyes on Aung San Suu Kyi, offering the first independently verified glimpse of Myanmar's ousted leader in years. The International Committee of the Red Cross says its representative met privately with the 81-year-old in Naypyitaw on Monday, amid mounting international demands to confirm her condition after the 2021 military coup, the Guardian reports. Photos released by Myanmar's military-backed government show the former leader in traditional dress in a nearly bare room and cutting a birthday cake marked "Happy Birthday Aunty Suu 19.6.2026."
"In the photos, Suu Kyi appeared relaxed and was smiling," the AP notes. "She did not show any obvious signs of ill health, although her physical condition could not be independently assessed from the images." No one from the Red Cross has confirmed her health status, either, with a spokesman noting that the confidentiality they keep around such matters "is what allows [us] to obtain access in the first place," per the New York Times.
Her son, Kim Aris, who'd publicly pressed for proof she was alive, called the visit "the first positive development concerning her in more than five years," but he urged that it lead to direct contact, broader humanitarian access, and her unconditional release, along with other political prisoners, per the Guardian. He also tells the Times that the government got the date of his mother's birthday wrong on the cake.
