Grim Discovery Wasn't So Grim After All

Two men in rural Australia thought they'd uncovered a murder—turns out it was a convincing fake. The men were driving near the village of Oallen, about 140 miles southwest of Sydney, when they pulled over and found an abandoned suitcase that appeared to hold human remains, reports the BBC. Responding officers were fooled as well, and police announced a homicide investigation was underway. It wasn't until about 20 hours later that forensic testing established the "body" was actually a highly realistic doll, complete with clothing, hair, a nose ring, and markings that looked like bruises, per the Australian Broadcasting Corporation.

Superintendent Linda Bradbury defended the officers because "the idea is to not disturb crime scenes as much as possible to maintain the integrity of our investigation," adding that she had "no regrets" about how things were handled. Police were reaching out to the men who spotted the suitcase to let them know they didn't find a body after all.
