Gen Z has quietly turned a niche term into its go-to way of calling someone out—though a sure sign that a term is about to become out of date is when media outlets all over start writing about it. As is happening with "larping." The term LARP originated years ago as an acronym for live-action role-play, explains USA Today. Think friends in medieval outfits carrying foam swords on a fake battlefield, per Parents. Today's iteration more broadly refers to posers: People acting in a way "not actually authentic to who they are as an individual," 24-year-old Morgan Hurlock tells USA Today. A girl or guy who goes to the gym but mainly to get photos for their Instagram feed, for example.
A post at North by Northwestern notes that larping seemed to first enter the lexicon in this manner to describe people pretending to be fans of particular musicians without knowing much about them. Whatever's going on, Google Trends has clocked a 5,000% increase in searches for "larping" over the past five years. YouTube has seen a similar spike over the past year.
Linguist Adam Aleksic says "larping" has essentially swapped in for "performative," joining earlier Gen Z digs like "NPC" (non-player character) and "industry plant." Experts say it's also a window into a generation obsessed with appearing real—but never "cringe." Media psychologist Don Grant notes Gen Z grew up gauging their worth by online reaction, while influencers, AI, and polished "influencer voices" have fueled distrust. Hurlock's worry is that the pejorative will dissuade young people from trying new things for fear of being labeled a larper.
