Sweden Tells Dementia Patient to Leave After 20 Years There

A 74-year-old Briton with severe dementia who has lived in Sweden for over two decades has been told he must leave within days or face deportation. The BBC reports that George Mason, originally from Leicestershire, England, and now in a specialist care home, was informed through the British Embassy that Swedish authorities had set a Thursday deadline, his daughter said, per the BBC. "The state's interest in regulated immigration outweighs Horace Mason's interest in continuing to reside" in Sweden, the Migration Court of Appeal ruled in July, per the Guardian.

Mason's family argues that doctors have warned that moving him to the UK could endanger his life and sharply worsen his condition. Swedish officials say he can receive care in Britain. Swedish Migration Agency documents show that an application for permanent residency for Mason was made in December 2021. All applications, including one based on his son's Swedish status, were rejected. The family has launched a fundraiser to mount a fresh legal challenge. "It's inhumane," Mason's son said.
