Americans are souring on the Iran war, and they're also not warming to the man who launched it. A new Reuters/Ipsos survey finds support for US military action against Iran down to 31%, the weakest backing since the early phase of the conflict that began with US-Israeli strikes on Feb. 28. Republican support has slipped notably, from 77% in March to 69%. Trump's job-approval rating remains stuck at 33% for the second poll in a row, the lowest level recorded in either his first or second term. MS NOW reports that, according to a new YouGov/Economist survey, the president's net approval rating is underwater in 47 out of 50 states.
The war's effect on gas prices—now more than $1 a gallon above prewar levels—is undercutting his pledges to tame inflation and stay out of drawn-out conflicts, per Reuters. Eighty-three percent of respondents expect a prolonged war. Independent voters, meanwhile, currently lean Democratic in a hypothetical congressional vote, 33% to 19%. The New York Times compiles other recent approval polls here. Trump, for his part, doesn't seem to like the public's views on the matter, using a Monday Truth Social post to call such surveys "fake" and part of "demoralization operations" designed to keep Republicans from voting, per USA Today.
