A ground worker at Montréal-Trudeau International Airport was killed Monday evening in an accident involving a French Bee Airbus A350, prompting multiple investigations into what went wrong, the New York Times reports. Authorities say emergency crews were called around 7:30pm after the worker was struck as the plane was moving in reverse and was taken to a hospital, where he died.
The ramp worker was identified by his union as Oscar Robayo, an employee of airport services firm Samsic. Canada's Transportation Safety Board and Employment and Social Development Canada have both opened investigations, with officials saying they aim to determine the cause and prevent a repeat. French Bee said the incident involved the aircraft and a pushback vehicle but noted that the exact sequence of events remains unclear. Airport officials say support is being offered to affected staff and passengers.
"There's a lot of elements; you're handling heavy equipment, big equipment, you're handling the weather, the night, the day," a spokesperson for Robayo's union tells CTV News. A passenger aboard the Airbus involved tells the CBC about the horrifying moment as it unfolded on his seatback screen before the video feed was shut down: "I could see the nose landing gear. And then all of a sudden, it was as if the tarmac worker had stumbled, and then at that moment, the plane backed up and we felt the shock."
