George W. Bush marked the 25th anniversary of 9/11 with a painting of the exact moment he was told, "America is under attack." On Friday on social media, Bush shared his artwork depicting then-chief of staff Andrew Card leaning in to brief him as he sat in a Florida classroom with elementary students, Bush's face rendered with a shocked look, per the Hill. The painting anchors a new exhibition at the George W. Bush Presidential Center in Dallas, on display through the end of the month. The Washington Post notes that the original image has long "been mocked by comedians, weaponized by political opponents, and replayed endlessly in documentaries and retrospectives."

Other works in Bush's social media post show smoke rising over Manhattan, a fallen officer's badge, and a huge American flag draped down a building. "Twenty-five years ago, the actions of an enemy revealed the spirit of the American people," Bush wrote, adding a call to remember "the precious lives stolen." In a recent conversation with Condoleezza Rice at the presidential center, he recalled realizing on Sept. 11 that "this was a war" and that his role was to rally the nation. Bush joined other former presidents at a Ground Zero memorial on Friday, while President Trump led a ceremony at the Pentagon.
