A man ICE sought to deport was shot and badly wounded by an immigration agent on a North Austin roadside Sunday, prompting immediate demands for an outside probe, CBS News reports. Authorities say 28-year-old Venezuelan national Wilber Rafael Garces Perez was struck once in the torso around 1pm and is in serious but stable condition, according to city officials. His attorney says his family lost track of him hours after he called his wife from the hospital "yelling in pain," and that law enforcement forced them off hospital property. Protesters quickly gathered at the site of the shooting, the AP reports.
Austin police say they were not involved and emphasize early details are sketchy; a council member alleges an ICE officer rammed Garces Perez's car and then fired at least five times. Homeland Security Investigations, a division of ICE, will lead the inquiry with FBI assistance, a shift from the FBI's traditional role at the head of such investigations that has already stirred criticism. Local officials, including US Rep. Greg Casar and Mayor Kirk Watson, are pressing for an independent investigation and rapid release of any body camera footage amid broader concern over shootings tied to the Trump administration's stepped-up deportation push. At least one Republican official in Texas, however, insisted the real "war is the one being waged against Americans through mass legal & illegal immigration," Fox News reports.
