If you're dashing into 7-Eleven or Circle K for a quick snack or gas fill-up, a Guardian investigation suggests you may be paying more than you realized. The newspaper reports that the country's two largest convenience-store chains have repeatedly failed state and local price-accuracy inspections. In examples from stores across the country, inspectors documented register totals that exceeded shelf tags on candy, drinks, toiletries, medications, and more, along with gas pumps charging more than roadside signs. A sampling: "Between 2023 and 2025, Circle K locations failed 35% of their government price-accuracy inspections in Florida, 62% in North Carolina, and 82% in Columbus, Ohio," the story reads. "Over the same period, its larger rival, 7-Eleven, flunked 47% of inspections in both Colorado and Utah and 79% in Ontario county in upstate New York."

Circle K and 7-Eleven officials declined interviews, but they issued statements saying they take pricing accuracy seriously and blame complex systems, vendors, and staffing pressures for mistakes. An inspector in Utah lays out a hypothetical scenario: A delivery person for Coca-Cola or Frito-Lay might stock products on shelves and add a vendor-generated sale tag, and stores are sometimes too understaffed to catch the mistake. Critics, however, argue that modern inventory tech leaves little excuse. Another caution for consumers: Stretched-thin regulators rarely inspect stores unless consumers complain.
