Ilhan Omar is speaking out about the early-morning federal raid on her Minnesota home last week, saying she awoke to the sound of agents "pounding" on her doors and thought there must've been a fire. It soon became clear that they were there with a search warrant. The Democratic congresswoman told MS NOW that 10 to 15 Homeland Security Investigations agents spent nearly five hours combing through her residence and left with 17 items, including phones and her husband's Somali phrase book. She added that the search was strange since authorities already have her late father's immigration paperwork from decades ago, per the Guardian. Officials are reportedly investigating whether Omar was misrepresented as a minor on that paperwork.
Omar denies the claims, calling the allegations baseless conspiracy theories amplified by people close to President Trump, who has publicly called for her to return to her native Somalia since 2019. Trump on Tuesday called her a "sick, very dishonest person who hates our country" and suggested she could face deportation or jail. "He's got everything to do with it," Omar says of the investigation, which follows another in 2019 that resulted in no charges, per NBC News. She adds the raid was meant to intimidate her and satisfy Trump's supporters. "You don't show up to somebody's house that early in the morning unless you're trying to freak them out and ... it obviously did freak all of us out," she says, noting she's been forced to move because her address was made public.
