President Trump on Sunday said the US Navy would "immediately" begin a blockade of the Strait of Hormuz after US-Iran peace talks in Pakistan ended without an agreement. Trump also said the US was ready to "finish up" Iran at the "appropriate moment," stressing that Tehran's nuclear ambitions were at the core of the failure to end the war, per the AP. Iran, meanwhile, deployed naval forces off its coast, perhaps in anticipation of a move by US ground troops, reports the Wall Street Journal. The US blockade seemingly ends hopes that the war will come to an end in the coming days, notes CNBC.
"Effective immediately, the United States Navy, the Finest in the World, will begin the process of BLOCKADING any and all Ships trying to enter, or leave, the Strait of Hormuz," Trump wrote Sunday on Truth Social. He accused Iran of "world extortion" for slowing traffic through the strait to a trickle, and the new move appears to be part of a larger US plan to take control of the waterway out of the hands of Tehran.
"At some point, we will reach an 'ALL BEING ALLOWED TO GO IN, ALL BEING ALLOWED TO GO OUT' basis, but Iran has not allowed that to happen by merely saying, 'There may be a mine out there somewhere,' that nobody knows about but them," he said. "THIS IS WORLD EXTORTION, and Leaders of Countries, especially the United States of America, will never be extorted." He also summed up the marathon talks led by Vice President JD Vance: "So, there you have it, the meeting went well, most points were agreed to, but the only point that really mattered, NUCLEAR, was not."
