If you're longing to live in a small town, or even just to get out of the big city to visit one, you might want to be even more specific than simply "small town." USA Today gets granular in parsing out America's best, culling travel-writer nominations from every part of the country, then putting those picks up for a reader vote. The editors came up with nine distinct winners, based on region or other qualifying factors. Here's the cream of the crop, from coast to coast:
- Best coastal small town: Pismo Beach, California
- Best historic small town: Granbury, Texas
- Best small college town: State College, Pennsylvania
- Best small-town cultural scene: Ruidoso, New Mexico
- Best small-town food scene: Lewisburg, West Virginia
- Best Midwestern small town: Vevay, Indiana
- Best small town in the Northeast: Sewickley, Pennsylvania
- Best small town in the South: Starkville, Mississippi
- Best small town in the West: Palisade, Colorado
