New York's most famous skyscraper attracted more attention than usual on Wednesday, as two masked climbers scaled the Empire State Building's broadcast tower and unfurled a banner. The pair, believed to be a man and a woman, reached the very top of the spire around noon and displayed a sign reading, "When the power of love beats the love of power the world knows peace."
CBS News reports an NYPD helicopter responded, and the climbers began descending around 12:35pm. When they reached the spire's base, the man got down on one knee and appeared to propose, reports the New York Post. It's not yet known how they managed the feat. NBC News reports that once they reached street level, they were arrested.
The Post reports footage from the top was posted to Angela Nikolau's Instagram account; the 33-year-old self-described "neoartist" has other photos featuring Vanya Beerkus, 32, presumably the other person atop the building. The two have also climbed San Francisco's Bay Bridge and Merdeka 118—the world's second-tallest building—in Kuala Lumpur. Including the spire, the Empire State Building measures 1,454 feet. This story was updated with news of their arrest.
