A newly released video shows an Oklahoma high school principal charging a gunman who, according to investigators, had planned a Columbine-style shooting and was allegedly intent on killing the principal. Court records seen by KFOR say 20-year-old former student Victor Lee Hawkins walked into Pauls Valley High School on April 7 with two loaded semi-automatic pistols, ordered people to the ground, and tried to shoot a student—only to be thwarted by a gun malfunction. He fired at another student and missed. As students fled, Principal Kirk Moore ran toward the gunfire, burst into the lobby, and tackled Hawkins, removing a pistol from his hand as the assistant principal joined in and helped pin Hawkins down until police arrived.

Moore, 60, was shot in the right leg during the struggle and has since been released from the hospital and is recovering. The affidavit states Hawkins told investigators he stole his father's guns, drove his father's truck to the school, and "wanted to conduct his own school shooting like the Columbine shooters did," specifically targeting Moore, whom he "did not like." Pauls Valley Police Chief Don May tells NBC News that Moore's tackle prevented a tragedy. "It doesn't surprise me the actions that he took, but it is amazing, the actions that he took," May says. "There's not a doubt in my mind that he saved kids' lives."

In a statement Friday, Moore said he was looking forward to getting back to work as soon as possible. "Like so many educators around the country, we prepare for these events through training and careful assessment of the threats," he said. "I am grateful that my instincts and training, as well as God's hand, were available to me." Hawkins, who graduated from the school last year, is being held on charges including shooting with intent to kill. His next court date is May 8.
