A woman's death and an in-flight fire have triggered an updated recall of a portable wireless phone charger containing a lithium-ion battery. Federal regulators and phone accessory brand Casely this week reannounced the recall of about 429,000 Casely Power Pods 5000mAh MagSafe wireless chargers after a 75-year-old New Jersey woman died from burns suffered when her charger allegedly caught fire and exploded in August 2024. In a separate incident in February, a 47-year-old woman sustained first-degree burns when a charger reportedly ignited and exploded mid-flight. When the initial recall was announced in April 2025, only six minor burns had been reported across 51 incidents, per USA Today.
The US Consumer Product Safety Commission now describes 79 total reports of the devices overheating, swelling, or catching fire, with multiple burn injuries. The recalled units are Casely Power Pods 5000mAh with model number "E33A" on the back and "Casely" engraved on the front, sold online by Casely, Amazon, and other retailers between March and September 2024 for $30 to $70. Owners are urged to stop using them immediately and request a free replacement. They'll first need to submit photos showing the device has been marked "Recalled" with permanent marker. The units can then be disposed of, though not in the regular trash. Casely says owners should explore local hazardous waste options, per Fox Business.
