Miranda Priestly and Andy Sachs, aka Meryl Streep and Anne Hathaway, are back for The Devil Wears Prada 2, and critics mostly think fans of the original will be pleased. The film has a solid 79% fresh rating among critics at Rotten Tomatoes, while audiences offer a more favorable 88%. Some samples:

  • Manohla Dargis: The New York Times reviewer praises director David Frankel, who "wisely gives his four main performers plenty of room to show off their comic timing; they're clearly enjoying themselves, which heightens the pleasure of watching talented actors getting their collective groove on." Bonus: This script gives more Streep more to play with.

  • Deborah Ross: She's a fan of the first film from 20 years ago, but not the sequel. While "the landscape has moved on, the characters have remained the same and halfway through I started to drift," writes Ross in the Spectator. "Another blow is that it's become more sentimental and less satirical. In other words—and I hate to be the one to say it—it's not as good as the original."
  • Johnny Oleksinski: The New York Post reviewer found that the movie "is a good time, even if the high-pressure world of Vogue, er, Runway magazine is no longer the epitome of New York luxury and glamour it was back in the aughts." It's a bit too long in his view, but "No. 2 is likable and thankfully not the garish embarrassment that it could have so easily become."
  • Katie Walsh: The sequel surpasses the original because "it actually has something to say," writes Walsh for Tribune News Service. "It's bigger, better and it resonates with the cultural zeitgeist while maintaining the spirit, style and wit of the original. Like Andy, the sequel is older, and wiser."
