A planned fight among young people escalated into a mass shooting at a Winston-Salem, North Carolina park Monday morning as multiple people fired at each other, authorities said. The shooting happened around 10am at Leinbach Park, which is next to Jefferson Middle School, Winston-Salem police said in a social media post. The shooting did not occur at the school, which was on lockdown until the scene was secure, the North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation said.

  • Winston-Salem Police Capt. Kevin Burns said a 16-year-old and a 17-year-old died at the scene, the AP reports. Five others between the ages of 14 and 19 were shot and suffered injuries ranging from critical to minor, Burns said at a news conference. Four of those victims are female, officials said.

  • "Detectives are actively working to determine each individual's role in this incident," Burns said, per CNN. "Preliminary information indicates that some of those injured may have also been involved in the shooting." He said police received a report of a fight in progress at 9:52am and officers were on their way to the scene when there was a report of shots fired.
  • Winston-Salem Police Chief William Penn said no one was in custody. "I feel like everyone else. I'm frustrated, I'm angry, I'm sad. This didn't have to happen," Penn said. He said he couldn't immediately answer whether the teens who died were the ones scheduled to fight. The police chief also said "no" when asked if it was known what the fight was about.
  • The shootings happened in a park in a suburban and residential area northwest of downtown Winston-Salem, a city of about 250,000.
