Sen. Mark Warner's office on Monday announced the death of his 36-year-old daughter, Madison, after what it described as a decades-long struggle with juvenile diabetes and other medical complications. "We are heartbroken beyond words," the Virginia Democrat and his wife, Lisa Collins, said in a statement, per NBC News. "She filled our lives with love and laughter, and her absence leaves an immeasurable void. We are grateful for the loving support of friends and family during this difficult time and ask for privacy as we navigate this profound loss."
Condolences arrived from both parties. Vice President JD Vance wrote on X that his family was thinking of the Warners and called it "a terrible loss at such a young age." In a statement, Democratic Sen. Raphael Warnock said, "Mark, I'm praying for you and your family as you grieve this unimaginable loss. Even in this grief, God is near to the brokenhearted, holding you in ways we cannot always see or feel right now."
Madison was the oldest of the 71-year-old senator's three daughters. Warner, who is running for a fourth term, has long been an advocate for diabetes research, citing his family's experiences, CBS News reports. In the Senate, he has called for making insulin more affordable and accessible. "Two of my three daughters have preexisting medical conditions that would not be covered under these junk plans," he said in a 2019 debate about health care plans that allowed providers to discriminate against people with preexisting conditions, per People.
