Police in Baton Rouge say a 17-year-old was killed and five people were wounded when a mass shooting Thursday at the Mall of Louisiana sent employees and shoppers fleeing. Two groups of people reportedly opened fire at each other inside the mall's food court, WAFB reports. Some of those responsible fled as a huge police response arrived, per the AP. Five people were in custody later in the day, Baton Rouge Police Chief TJ Morse said. Three seniors from Ascension Episcopal School in Lafayette were among those shot. Other people were hurt but not by gunfire, officials said.
"Two groups of people got into an argument inside the food court and started shooting at each other," Morse told reporters. "Unfortunately there were some innocent people in the area who might have also caught some rounds." The chief appealed to witnesses to provide any video of the shooting. Authorities initially said as many as 10 people had been injured but later revised that number. Kennedy Barnum, 22, said she had gone to the mall for lunch at the food court when she heard a woman on the phone outside say, "I'll call you back. There's an active shooter in the mall." Within five minutes, Barnum said, law enforcement had swarmed the mall. She saw people running and crying, including a girl she described as hysterical.
