Authorities in the northwestern part of Tennessee are hunting for a retired Special Forces soldier accused of shooting his wife, and they warn he's equipped to stay hidden. The Stewart County Sheriff's Office says Craig Berry allegedly shot his wife during a domestic dispute around 1:30am on Friday, then vanished into the woods near Dover, reports USA Today. He's wanted on a charge of second-degree attempted murder and is believed to be armed with at least one handgun and extra ammunition. The condition of his wife, who Newsweek reports is a teacher, hasn't been disclosed.
Berry, described by authorities as highly trained in survival, swimming, and diving, was reportedly captured on a trail camera wearing camouflage, per the sheriff's office. Multiple agencies—including the Tennessee Highway Patrol, Tennessee Bureau of Investigation, Department of Homeland Security, and US Marshals Service—have joined the manhunt, which has focused on an area stretching from Gray's Landing to Highway 232 and River Trace Road. Investigators say they suspect he may be getting help. He isn't believed to have a phone or other way to communicate. Residents have been urged to lock their doors and call 911 with any possible sightings.
