Cruise Passenger Dies in Suspected Bahamas Drowning

An 83-year-old American man died while snorkeling at Norwegian Cruise Line's private island in the Bahamas, authorities said. Police on Great Stirrup Cay reported the man was found unresponsive in the water on Sunday and later pronounced dead on the island, USA Today reports. His name has not been released. According to the Royal Bahamas Police Force, the man's son told officers they had been snorkeling together and became separated as they wrapped up. When the son noticed his father had stopped, he went back and found him in the water without his mask, unresponsive.

A lifeguard and medical staff responded, but he could not be revived. Norwegian Cruise Line said it was "saddened" by the death and offered condolences to the family. Officials did not say which ship he was sailing on, but People reports the Norwegian Getaway was at the island at the time during a Miami-to-Bahamas cruise; it returned to Miami Monday. An autopsy is pending, and the investigation continues. The incident follows two separate drowning deaths of Carnival Cruise Line passengers at the company's Celebration Key destination in the Bahamas in August.
