At least two workers out of Germany's Frankfurt Airport have now died of malaria, after six employees there contracted the disease in a rare airport outbreak. Initial reports had indicated just one death, per the BBC, which noted that all six workers were males who work in different jobs in different parts of the airport. Citing local health officials who spoke to Germany's DPA news agency, Deutsche Welle reports that the first death is said to have occurred in July, though at the time the cause of death wasn't clear; the second death reportedly happened this month. The other four infected workers are said to be recuperating well. Officials, meanwhile, are now examining blood samples to see if all six men were bitten by the same mosquito, per the BBC; public health officials say those results could take weeks.

Malaria-infected mosquitoes appear to have traveled by air to Germany's busiest hub, with deadly consequences. Health officials say a Frankfurt Airport employee has died of malaria in what they describe as a rare "airport malaria" outbreak that has sickened five other workers, reports the BBC. Authorities suspect infected mosquitoes arrived at the airport via an incoming flight in July, reports Euronews. Traps were set up across the airport, and captured insects will be analyzed to pinpoint species and origin.
Germany's Robert Koch Institute called such "airport malaria" cases extremely uncommon; the last known one also occurred at Frankfurt Airport, in 2023. A study that tried to quantify the number of European cases tied to mosquitoes that likely arrived in planes and baggage between 1969 and 2024 found 145 cases.
