Iran's Revolutionary Guard navy on Saturday warned that any attack on Iranian oil tankers or commercial vessels would be met with a "heavy assault" on one of the US bases in the region and enemy ships, the AP reports, even as a tenuous ceasefire appeared to be holding. Iranian state TV reported the warning a day after the US struck two Iranian oil tankers, casting doubt on the month-old ceasefire that the US has insisted is still in effect. Traffic remained blocked Saturday in the Strait of Hormuz. There are no indications at the moment that the two sides are any closer to agreeing on peace terms, per the New York Times. Developments include:

  • Peace talks: The US has said it's awaiting Iran's response to its latest proposal for ending the war, reopening the strait to shipping, and rolling back Tehran's nuclear program, per the AP. And Russian President Vladimir Putin said Moscow's proposal to take enriched uranium from Iran to help negotiate a settlement remains on the table. Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif said his country has been in contact with the US and Iran "day and night" in an effort to move negotiations along.
  • UK move: The British navy is sending a destroyer to the Middle East in "pre-positioning" for a later attempt to secure the strait, per the Times. The HMS Dragon could remain to protect commercial ships after the war, per the AP.

  • Oil in gulf: A large oil slick is spreading in the Persian Gulf off Kharg Island, satellite images show. Kharg Island is Iran's principal primary crude oil export terminal for crude oil. The cause of the spill wasn't clear.
  • World Cup: Iran's soccer federation said the national team "definitely" will participate in the 2026 FIFA World Cup, calling on hosts US, Canada, and Mexico to consider its concerns around the team's travel and how it will be treated, per the AP. And there's to be no trouble about issuing visas to the players and staff, the federation said, "especially those who served their military service in the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps."
