A day after President Trump rejected Iran's latest peace offer, neither side is budging in public comments:

  • Iran: Foreign ministry spokesman Esmail Baghaei on Monday described Tehran's offer as "generous and reasonable," reports the Wall Street Journal. He said Tehran isn't asking for concessions but for its "legitimate rights," including a deal it says would secure shipping in the Strait of Hormuz.
  • Iran, II: State media, however, listed demands that Washington is unlikely to accept, notes the New York Times: US payment of war damages, recognition of Iranian sovereignty over the strait, and an end to crushing sanctions without major nuclear concessions.

  • Trump: He told reporters on Monday that the month-old ceasefire is on the brink of failure, reports CNBC. "I would call it the weakest, right now, after reading that piece of garbage they sent us—I didn't even finish reading it," Trump said. "I would say the ceasefire is on massive life support, where the doctor walks in and says, 'Sir, your loved one has approximately a 1% chance of living.'"
  • Oil prices: Brent crude climbed as much as 4% on Monday to $105.50 a barrel on the impasse, per the Guardian.
