A Minnesota teen who lost his mom in the Iran war will head to graduation with a mailbox full of support from strangers. Nearly 1,300 cards have arrived so far for Owen, the eldest son of Master Sgt. Nicole Amor, a US soldier killed in a drone attack in Kuwait, according to a family friend organizing the effort. That friend, Angelina Grooms—who went to high school with Owen's father, Joey—says she asked former classmates if they'd join her in sending Owen a graduation card to brighten a milestone his mother won't see, KCCI reports.

The idea spread on Facebook and beyond, drawing cards from all 50 states, plus Canada and Germany. Grooms, a military spouse, is collecting the messages at her Ohio law office, then forwarding them on as Owen prepares to graduate in White Bear Lake, Minnesota, on June 4. "At the end of the day, this is a little boy who lost his mom," she said, asking others to help give his big day "some joy."

Amor, 39, was one of six soldiers killed in a drone strike on March 1, the day after the US and Israel launched strikes on Iran. On Monday, the White Bear Lake VFW and American Legion honored her in a Memorial Day ceremony, MPR News reports. Her mother, Deb Stafslien, said the community support has been "incredibly moving." Joey Amor said he felt "humbled." "There were tons of people here that didn't have to be here for someone they didn't know," he said. "And that speaks to White Bear."

  • Grooms said cards for Owen can be sent to her at Buckler Callihan Law, 531 6th Street, Portsmouth, Ohio, 45662.
