A collision on the Queensboro Bridge in New York City proved fatal to two people, though no cars were involved. Instead, an electric scooter collided with a bicycle, and both riders were killed, reports ABC News. Police say 39-year-old Francis del Valle, riding a high-powered stand-up scooter, and 35-year-old cyclist Dmytro Stechenko were traveling in opposite directions on the bridge's bike path around 8:20am Thursday when they slammed into each other. Both were taken to New York Presbyterian-Queens and pronounced dead. Investigators haven't said how fast either was going or what triggered the collision.
Del Valle was on a Blade GT II scooter, a $1,700 model promoted as capable of reaching 53mph in under four seconds—well above New York City's legal limit for e-mobility devices, making it illegal on city streets. The city's limit for standing scooters is 20mph, notes the New York Times. A spokesperson for Mayor Zohran Mamdani said the city is reviewing the incident and vowed continued enforcement against illegal e-scooters.
