Tuesday was primary night in six states, with a high-profile governor's race in California still unresolved as of early Wednesday. A quick roundup of initial results:

  • California governor's race: The gubernatorial faceoff in the Golden State, in which the top two vote-getters from any party will advance to the general, showed Republican Steve Hilton, a former host on Fox News, and Democrat Xavier Becerra, who used to lead the Department of Health and Human Services, in the lead in the morning. Billionaire Tom Steyer was trailing in third, reports the Washington Post, which notes the state is often slow to count ballots—meaning the tally could still shift.
  • LA mayor: Incumbent Democrat Karen Bass will advance to the general in November, and Republican Spencer Pratt, a former reality-TV star, appeared to be in second place in initial reports, though Democrat Nithya Raman, who serves on the City Council, was gaining ground as more votes came in, per CNN. If no one candidate brings in 50% of the vote, the top two finishers will advance.

  • New Jersey congressional race: Former Navy helicopter pilot Rebecca Bennett secured the Democratic nomination in the Garden State to take on incumbent Republican Congressman Thomas Kean Jr., who has been MIA from work for a few months—a race the New York Times says "is expected to be among the country's most contested midterm matchups."
  • Iowa Senate race: Bolstered by support from Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, State Rep. Josh Turek won the Democratic primary for a Senate run in Iowa, beating Schumer critic Zach Wahls, a state senator, per the Post. Turek will face off against Republican Ashley Hinson in November.
  • Iowa governor: Despite an endorsement from President Trump, Republican Randy Feenstra lost his primary by a hair to farmer Zach Lahn, who uses the slogan "Iowa First." Lahn will take on Democratic state auditor Rob Sand, who ran uncontested, in the general.

  • Montana Senate race: It's an "unusual" one, per the Post, with Air Force veteran Alani Bankhead taking the Democratic nomination—though she may drop out to allow independent Seth Bodnar, a former University of Montana chief, to go up against Republican Kurt Alme, a former US attorney.
  • New Mexico governor's race: Former Interior Secretary Deb Haaland secured the Democratic nomination for governor, taking on Republican Greggory Hull, the mayor of Rio Rancho, in November. If she wins the general, Haaland would be the first Native American female governor, per the AP.
  • South Dakota governor's race: Republican businessman Toby Doeden rose to the top of the pack on Tuesday, meaning he'll take part in a runoff against incumbent GOP Gov. Larry Rhoden, who took over for Kristi Noem when she went to serve in the Trump administration, per the South Dakota Searchlight.
