On the day Vladimir Putin rolled out his biggest business showcase, drones instead grabbed the spotlight over his hometown. Ukrainian drones struck infrastructure sites in three of St. Petersburg's districts on Wednesday, injuring several people and forcing the city's main airport to halt operations for nearly five hours, local officials said. The attack coincided with the opening of the St. Petersburg International Economic Forum, referred to as "Putin's Davos." Three things to know:

  • President Volodymyr Zelensky said Ukrainian forces targeted the city's oil terminal, and posted video purporting to show oil tanks in flames. NPR reports he noted the drones traveled 600 miles to get there. A Kremlin rep vowed a "systematic" response and said Russia would press on with the war "in order to for these strikes not to happen."
  • The New York Times describes it as the second time in a month that Ukraine has targeted a major city ahead of a key Kremlin event; in May, Moscow was struck just ahead of the country's annual Victory Day parade. A scaled-down version of the event was held, with Ukraine quipping it would "permit" the parade to take place.

  • NBC News notes that in a reversal, a US delegation will attend the forum this year; Rodney Cook, the man at the helm of President Trump's White House ballroom addition, will lead the group. The event typically runs for four days, and Putin is scheduled to speak on Friday.
