Airport screeners in Sacramento say a passenger's backpack held far more than the usual toiletries and reading material. Federal prosecutors allege that 49-year-old Kimani Osayande Jones showed up at Sacramento International Airport on Saturday evening—with his face partially covered and blue gloves on—and tried to board an American Airlines flight to the North Carolina city of Charlotte with a DIY explosive, multiple bladed weapons, zip ties, a butane torch lighter, and five cellphones whose cameras were taped over, per the Los Angeles Times.

One phone allegedly had a 15-minute timer queued up; another displayed a message from an unknown number: "We will be awaiting your call." Jones, who told officers he didn't know the items were in his bag and said he was OK with getting rid of them, was arrested after invoking his Miranda rights and declining interviews with local deputies and the FBI. The explosive device, a small cylinder with a fuse, tested as "viable and energetic"; an FBI bomb tech said a midair detonation at more than 10,000 feet could have damaged a window and potentially affected cabin pressure.

Jones is charged with unlawful possession of explosive material in an airport and faces up to five years in prison and a $250,000 fine, per a TSA release. The complaint says he previously made 13 calls to the FBI reporting threats, surveillance, and harassment. No motive has yet been offered, per the San Francisco Chronicle.
