The likelihood of a peace deal in the Iran war being at hand was thrown further into doubt Sunday when Israel struck what it called a Hezbollah command center in Beirut's suburbs. Iran then warned it may abandon negotiations with the US and respond militarily, the Wall Street Journal reports, and President Trump publicly scolded Israel, calling the Beirut attack an overreaction that risked derailing peace negotiations with Iran. Lebanese state media reported that three people were killed and 15 wounded in the strike, which followed Hezbollah drone launches into Israeli territory that caused no reported injuries.
White House officials remained hopeful Sunday that the agreement with Iran will be signed before the day is out, per the New York Times, as Trump had advertised on Saturday. But Iran's parliamentary speaker, Mohammad-Bagher Ghalibaf, said the attack showed the US either can't or won't uphold its promises and questioned whether talks can continue. A senior Iranian commander vowed the strike "will not be left unanswered," per the Journal, while Israel's military said it was preparing for potential attacks. "We are very close to a Deal that will bring peace to the region, including to Lebanon," Trump posted, per the AP, adding, "Let's not blow it!"
