A mushroom hunt on Alaska's Kenai Peninsula turned into a gunfire-laced standoff between a woman, her dog, and a black bear. Lori Price was walking near Skilak Lake on June 7 with her two dogs, Chaos and Willis, when she heard a roar and realized a bear had reached them first. She told Alaska News Source that when she spotted Chaos in the bear's jaws, she drew the Glock 9mm pistol she was carrying and fired. "I pull my pistol and I shot, boom, down like a sack of potatoes goes the bear," Price says. "And I was like, okay, good, lights out."
But not so fast, notes Fox News: As Price checked on Chaos, who was badly bitten and losing blood, the bear twice got back up, prompting her to fire again before it finally moved off in another direction. Price and her dogs retreated to her vehicle, calling 911 along the way despite spotty cell service. A passing driver and emergency responders helped her get Chaos to a vet clinic, where he was treated for multiple wounds and released later that day. "My heart broke," Price says. "He had so many bite marks on him. It was like the bear thought he was like a little sardine." The dog is expected to fully recover, Price says, while Willis escaped unhurt.
