President Trump has selected a former Oklahoma state trooper with experience in immigration operations as the next director of US Immigration and Customs Enforcement. In a Truth Social post Saturday, the president said he's nominating Lance Schroyer, a 29-year law enforcement and Marine veteran, for the position, CBS News reports. He does not have experience with ICE, per NBC News. Trump called Schroyer a patriot with a record of "locking up the worst of the worst." Schroyer would replace acting Director David Venturella, who stepped in after Todd Lyons left ICE in April.
Homeland Security Secretary Markwayne Mullin, who also is from Oklahoma, quickly endorsed Trump's selection and urged the Senate to move quickly on confirmation. ICE has not had a Senate-approved director since early 2017; the agency has cycled through a series of acting chiefs for nearly a decade. Mullin himself just took office in March, the AP points out. The agency is central to Trump's promise of mass deportations.
