Someone Destroyed This US- Themed Beaver in Toronto Park

Vandalized World Cup statue sparks questions about politics, rivalry

A 4-foot-tall beaver in downtown Toronto meant as a cheerful nod to the US didn't survive the month. The resin statue, painted in an American soccer jersey and adorned with tiny American flags on its cheeks, was destroyed overnight on Saturday, leaving only pieces where it had stood among four dozen or so World Cup-themed beavers in a local park, reports the New York Times. The bits have since been replaced by a plain sign: "Due to circumstances beyond our control, the USA beaver has had to be permanently removed." Police are investigating the vandalism, but there are no witnesses and no clear motive.

"While it's disappointing, damage to temporary installations and public art is an unfortunate risk we anticipate when placing them in public spaces," the Old Town Toronto Business Improvement Area's Robyn Posner tells the CBC. The incident comes amid ongoing US-Canada tensions over tariffs and other political disputes, prompting questions about whether the beaver was targeted as a statement or as random mischief, per the Times. "Not everything's about politics," says one 18-year-old local, who called the damage unsurprising but regrettable.

Pete Hoekstra, the US ambassador to Canada, signaled to the vandal or vandals that if they were trying to stick it to the US, that wasn't the end result. "This act didn't hurt the United States," Hoekstra said, per the CBC. "It hurt a gifted Canadian-American artist, the Toronto community, and the charity this art was set to benefit." The beaver trail, dubbed "The Great Beaver Quest," has drawn about 9,700 participants using an app to find statues decorated by Canadian artists. Beavers representing other countries, including those for Brazil, England, and Iran, have also been hit but repaired. After the World Cup, the surviving beavers will be auctioned for charity.
