What should've been a 20-minute flight in the Bahamas turned deadly Friday when a small passenger plane went down on the country's largest island, killing all 10 people on board, officials say. The Cessna 402, operated by regional carrier Flamingo Air, took off from Nassau just after 1pm and was headed to San Andros Airport on North Andros when it "encountered difficulties and crashed into bushes" near its destination, the Bahamas' Aircraft Accident Investigation Authority said, per USA Today. Initial reports put the death toll at seven, but Prime Minister Philip Brave Davis later said a single survivor who had been pulled from the wreckage had died.
Authorities have not yet released the victims' names, but a local band confirmed five of its members were killed. Da Pond Band, which had been due to perform at an Independence Day celebration on Andros, named the members as Giovanni McKenzie, Mateo Winder, Rashad Storr, Tonique Gilot, and Travis Johnson, per LBC. A DJ, Melvin Henfield, was also killed alongside Andros natives Quintin Myers and Macaro Rolle, and pilot Franklyn Cambridge, per the St. Kitts-Nevis Observer. In a separate incident hours earlier, another Flamingo Air plane returned to Nassau over a reported concern, then caught fire after passengers disembarked; no one was hurt. Regulators have temporarily suspended Flamingo Air's operating certificate while investigators probe both events.
