Dog Turns on Toaster, Causes $200K Fire

A jump onto the kitchen counter turned disastrous in Maryland, where a dog inadvertently switched on a toaster and set off a house fire that killed three other pets, officials say. Fire crews were called to the home in Belcamp, around 25 miles east of Baltimore, Friday evening and brought the blaze under control in about 20 minutes, Fox News reports. Fire officials say the toaster ignited nearby combustibles after the dog, Bo, jumped on the counter, reports CBS News.

The homeowners were away; no people were hurt. Neighbors managed to pull Bo and another dog from the house, but a third dog and two cats died. The family's bearded dragon, Yoda, survived after a day in critical care, the Baltimore Sun reports. The fire was ruled accidental after deputy state fire marshals reviewed Ring camera footage that showed Bo jumping on the counter and pawing at items before the fire began in the kitchen and spread. The blaze caused an estimated $150,000 in structural damage to the home and $50,000 to its contents.
