Daniel Adongo made NFL history; now he's out of the country. Immigration and Customs Enforcement says the former Indianapolis Colts linebacker, the first Kenyan-born player in the league, was deported on June 20 after overstaying a visa in 2016, a year after his NFL stint ended. An immigration judge ordered his removal in March, per NBC News. The 37-year-old, who previously played professional rugby, had a string of arrests during and after his time with the Colts, though many charges—including felony intimidation and battery—were ultimately dropped. He was convicted of misdemeanor criminal mischief in 2020 and served six months in jail with credit for time served.
ICE said Adongo's most recent charges triggered detention under the Laken Riley Act, which requires holding certain undocumented immigrants arrested on suspicion of crimes like theft or burglary, even without a conviction. An ICE official called him a "dangerous individual" and said the community is "now safer" after his removal. Adongo's past lawyers have pointed to possible traumatic brain injury and mental illness, including a doctor's description of him as "acutely psychotic" and a social worker's suspicion of CTE, a degenerative brain disease linked to repeated head trauma. Homeland Security did not answer questions about those concerns. Adongo, who'd never seen a football game when he signed with the Colts in 2013, appeared in five games over three seasons, per USA Today.
