Mizusawa Wins GOP Senate Primary in Virginia

A retired Army major general is now the GOP's pick to take on a long-serving Democratic senator in Virginia. Bert Mizusawa won Tuesday's Republican primary for US Senate and will face incumbent Sen. Mark Warner in November, the AP projects. With about 29% of ballots counted when the race was called, Mizusawa had just over 53,000 votes, outpacing David Williams, a Marine Reserve lieutenant colonel and former CIA case officer, who had roughly 23,000.

Financial consultant Carrie Farington followed with about 15,000, WJLA reports. Mizusawa, a former deputy under secretary of the Army who has also run a contracting firm and law practice, will challenge Warner as the Democrat seeks a fourth term, which he says will be his final one. This year's primary was shifted almost two months later than usual because of the April referendum on redistricting, the Virginia Mercury reports. Mizusawa might face long odds in November: Virginia hasn't elected a Republican to the Senate since 2002, though the seat Mizusawa is seeking was held by Republican Sen. John Warner, no relation to Mark Warner, for 30 years before the latter Warner was elected.
