An armed man spotted roaming President Trump's Los Angeles–area golf course with a camera and an eye on security preparations two days before a rare visit from the president is now in custody, authorities say. Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department officials say 38-year-old Jeanine John Taele was detained Sunday at Trump National Golf Club in Rancho Palos Verdes after plainclothes federal agents flagged him as suspicious, the BBC reports. He was allegedly carrying a 16-round magazine, illegal under California law, loaded with hollow-point bullets, and a search of his vehicle turned up a loaded pistol and another loaded magazine.
The sheriff's department said Taele was seen "walking throughout the golf course grounds taking photographs and videos and appearing to monitor security-planning activities." Deputies later learned Taele was wanted in connection with a robbery in nearby El Segundo. A subsequent raid on his home in the Los Angeles County city of Downey uncovered an illegally modified AR-style rifle, another handgun, body armor, more high-capacity magazines, "a plethora" of ammunition, and notebooks with what investigators called "concerning statements."
Taele is being held on robbery, firearms, and ammunition charges; officials say no "credible threat to our communities" has been identified and he faces no charges related to harming Trump, though the investigation is ongoing. The arrest, which prompted involvement from the FBI's Joint Terrorism Task Force and the Secret Service, was announced on Tuesday, hours before Trump arrived at the golf club for a Republican National Committee fundraising dinner, the AP reports.
