Ocasio-Cortez Says She'll Freeze Her Eggs

"Usually I keep my private life quite private," Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez said in a series of videos newly posted to social media before announcing an exception. "I have made the decision to start freezing my eggs," she said. The New York congresswoman acknowledging there's a "political risk" in talking about the matter but saying that won't drive her choices, the New York Times reports. Ocasio-Cortez said she's going public to normalize "women having full lives in every context and every choice," and called her ability to pursue the procedure a "very privileged position" made feasible by advancing technology.

Egg freezing involves daily hormone injections, frequent monitoring, and a surgical retrieval—costly steps that aren't always covered by insurance. In an interview Sunday on ABC's This Week, Ocasio-Cortez framed her decision as part of a broader conversation about reproductive health, criticizing what she described as an administration limiting access to care, including abortion and healthy pregnancies. On This Week, Ocasio-Cortez also was asked whether she intends to run for president in 2028 or challenge fellow Democrat Chuck Schumer for his Senate seat, per Axios. "Anything is possible at this juncture," she answered.
