This Is Now the World's Busiest International Hub

South Korea's main air hub just leapfrogged some big names. New data from Airports Council International shows Incheon International Airport, the main airport for Seoul, handled 38.4 million international passengers in the first half of the year, edging out London's Heathrow at 37.79 million and Singapore's Changi at 34.53 million, the BBC reports. The airport credits its rise partly to travelers rerouting away from Middle East hubs amid the Iran war, with transfer passengers up 18% and Europe-bound transfers up more than 60%.

Dubai International, typically near the top of the rankings, is expected to drop out of the top five, with some passengers who previously went through Dubai on the way to Europe now traveling through Incheon. Opened in 2001, Incheon now connects to 158 international destinations, served by 101 airlines—more than other regional hubs like Hong Kong, Shanghai Pudong, or Tokyo Narita. The Guardian notes that South Korea also has the world's busiest air route, with 14.4 million passengers flying the domestic route between Seoul's Gimpo Airport and Jeju Island last year. Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport, which handled more than 106 million passengers last year, remains the world's busiest airport overall.
