Star Cambridge Professor Dies After Plagiarism Accusations

Jason Arday, a professor who days ago resigned from the University of Cambridge after being accused of plagiarism, has died at age 41. Police said he was discovered unresponsive at a home in Battersea, south London, on Friday afternoon and pronounced dead at the scene, the BBC reports. The Metropolitan Police, who have begun an investigation, described his death as unexpected but not suspicious. Arday, celebrated in 2023 as Cambridge's youngest Black professor, had been under intense scrutiny after another academic alleged multiple instances of plagiarism and questioned his résumé.

Arday denied the plagiarism accusations, acknowledging only errors, and said the fallout had brought "an unrelenting level of public scrutiny and personal attack." Announcing his resignation last week, he said the personal toll had become "too great." In a statement mourning their loss, per the Guardian, Arday's family members said: "Jason was subjected to a campaign of sustained abuse for more than three years since he accepted the role of professor at Cambridge University by those who would leave no stone unturned in their quest to undermine him. The campaign of misinformation was too much for Jason."
