A high-altitude trek through Washington state's Enchantments turned deadly for an Oklahoma City couple caught in a sudden snowstorm last weekend. Authorities say 45-year-old Sybil Claborn died and her husband was hospitalized with severe hypothermia after the pair became trapped around 8,000 feet with no overnight gear and soaked clothing, report KIRO and KOMO News.
The man texted 911 around 5:30pm on Sunday from the "core zone" of the Enchantments, reporting his wife couldn't move and that they were as many as 10 miles from the trailhead in 1 to 2 feet of snow. Two helicopter rescue attempts by the Army were blocked by weather conditions. A ground team from Chelan County Mountain Rescue reached the couple around 3:30am and found Claborn dead. Her husband was evacuated and taken to Cascade Medical Center. Officials have not yet released a cause of death for Claborn.
