President Trump's push to rebrand artificial intelligence appears to have sent internet entrepreneurs rushing to Slovenia. The country's domain registry says sign-ups for .si websites exploded in September, jumping from fewer than 2,000 the previous month to 44,000—an increase it called "unprecedented" over the past year, reports the BBC. The surge followed Trump's United Nations speech urging that AI be renamed "super intelligence," or SI—as it happens, the same initials as Slovenia's national domain.
"Since the speech, there has been a strong but stable increase of requests for the use of the '.si' domain," Klara Herman, spokeswoman for Register.si, tells Euronews. She said the spike, including 11,000 registrations on Sept. 30 alone, clearly stands out, though she stopped short of crediting Trump alone. Speculators may be banking on websites' future resale value, a longtime domain-world tactic. Trump has since ordered US agencies to swap "AI" for "SI" in official communications.
