A kindergartner's ordinary school day ended in a rare classroom tragedy in Florida on Wednesday. Police say 5-year-old Bellamy Dawkins-Morris was fatally injured when a roughly 120-pound interactive video board came off the wall and crashed onto him at Riviera Elementary School in Palm Bay around 11:30am, per the New York Times. Staff called 911 and gave first aid, but Bellamy died at a local hospital.
Brevard Public Schools put out a statement noting that the Promethean-brand display had been installed by a licensed vendor following the manufacturer's directions and announced inspections of all similar boards in the district. Promethean said it's investigating and called the death "tragic." Bellamy's family told local station WESH that he was autistic and that they'd been told he'd been pushing the board when it toppled.
"Somebody has to be held accountable," Bellamy's aunt tells the outlet. At a news conference cited by People, a rep for local police noted that "on the surface, this appears to be a tragic accident," but that "our investigators from the special victims unit, major case unit, and our crime scene personnel are actively investigating."
